On June 3, 2026, Vice President Han Zheng met in Beijing with Candidate for the Next UN Secretary-General Michelle Bachelet.

Han Zheng noted that the United Nations embodies the aspiration of people across the world for lasting peace and common prosperity. President Xi Jinping has put forward the vision of building a community with a shared future for humanity and the four major global initiatives, which are in line with the spirit of the UN Charter. China is ready to work with all parties to continue to firmly support the UN in playing its central role and promote the building of a more just and equitable global governance system. As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China will earnestly fulfill its responsibilities, continue to uphold a fair and just position, defend the authority of the UN, and safeguard the common interests of the Global South.

Michelle Bachelet highly appreciated China’s longstanding, firm commitment to multilateralism and the cause of the UN, and its support for advancing the three pillars of the UN — peace, development and human rights — in a balanced manner, upholding the principle of member state leadership, and supporting the UN in further improving quality and efficiency through reform. She expressed readiness to work with China to uphold the founding mission and purposes of the UN and jointly strengthen the role of the UN.
